Aranese is a variant of the Gascon dialect of Occitan spoken in the Val d'Aran in the northeast of Spain. About 90% of the inhabitants of the Val d'Aran can understand Aranese, and about 65% can speak it. Aranese has co-official status with Catalan and Spanish, and has been taught in schools since 1984.
